According to Variety, the long-awaited Malcolm in the Middle revival expected to be released this year on Disney+ will feature a cast of familiar faces; most notably, Christopher Masterson (My Best Friend’s Wedding, Intellectual Property) and Justin Berfield (The Good Life, Unhappily Ever After) will return as Malcolm’s folly-prone older brothers.
With Erik Per Sullivan (Twelve) who portrayed Malcolm’s younger brother Dewey missing from the spotlight for decades, his failure to return for the prized role may have been expected. In his stead, Disney+ has cast Caleb Ellsworth-Clark (Fargo, The Expanse).
Bringing in the new blood to the set will be Anthony Timpano (Riverdale, Nancy Drew) who will be playing the part of Malcolm’s youngest brother, Jaime. Vaughan Murrae (Before I Change My Mind, The Way Home) will star as Malcolm’s youngest sister, Kelly. And, being as Malcolm is all grown up now, Keeley Karsten (The Fabelmans, Hunters) will take the part of Malcolm’s daughter, Leah.
Obviously, the show wouldn’t be the same without the return of Emmy-nominated actor Frankie Muniz (Big Fat Liar, Agent Cody Banks) According to an exclusive report from Variety, he will be accompanied by Canadian actress Kiana Madeira (Trinkets, Fear Street) as his girlfriend, Tristan. Returning as Malcolm’s parents, odd star crossed lovers Lois and Hal, will be Bryan Cranston (Breaking Bad, Drive) and Jane Kaczmarek. (Cybill, Frasier)
Fans may remember that Malcolm’s brother Jamie was introduced into the storyline in season four of the original series. In the series finale, little sister Kelly was hinted at as Lois and Hale reveal that they are expecting yet again. As of now, the show is set for a limited release of four episodes. This is stark in comparison to the massive catalogue of old, but it will be more than enough to offer fans a revival that will possibly drawing them back into the previous series for another hit of nostalgia.
The role of Leah is drawn as “the daughter of Malcolm and has the same sarcastic humor, same impulsiveness and the same frighteningly high intelligence as him, but she’s far more sensitive and emotional.”Variety goes on to describe the role of Kelly as “the youngest child of Lois and Hal, who is self-sufficient, gets good grades and already wiser than most of the family.”
With production set to begin in the next few weeks in Vancouver, BC, Malcolm in the Middle seems to be well on its way. The official synopsis reads as follows: “Malcolm and his daughter are drawn into the family’s chaos when Hal and Lois demand his presence for their 40th wedding anniversary party.”
The show’s original creator, Linwood Boomer (Silver Spoons, Night Court), is set to return as the revival’s writer and executive producer. Directing the shows all four episodes will be Ken Kwapis (A Walk In The Woods, He’s Just Not That In To You), with production belonging to 20th Television and New Regency.
