Married couple and frequent producing partners Mark Burnett and Roma Downey are developing a series for Netflix, according to Variety. Messiah is about the modern world’s reaction, be it faith or skepticism, to seeming miracle worker in the Middle East. The project is still in its very early stages and has not yet been green-lighted, reports Deadline Hollywood. Joining Burnett and Downey as executive producer will be Andrew Deane and series writer Michael Petroni.
Mark Burnett has been featured in several news pieces for his tricky ties to President Donald Trump. Burnett is President of MGM Television and Digital Group and identifies as Democrat. Despite this and his support for President Obama, there was an uproar reported by Variety when Burnett tried to explain why he couldn’t release unpublished video or audio recordings of Donald Trump from his 14 seasons on reality game show The Apprentice. Mark Burnett first put the current president on screen in the show that launched him to national recognition, and how has to balance his relationship to Donald Trump and his public image.
Burnett is known not only for producing The Apprentice, but also other popular reality shows like Survivor and Shark Tank.
Most recently, Burnett and Downey have been instrumental in several Christian religious-themed projects, including launching the new Ben Hur film. They are also the duo behind popular History channel miniseries The Bible and its sequel A.D.: The Bible Continues. Burnett and Downey have also recently partnered with Fox stations to create a 24 hour faith and family entertainment network called Light TV.
