Chris Rock (The Longest Yard, Head of State) will be the first-ever comedian to perform a comedy special live on Netflix. According to Deadline, the streaming service is delving into live-streaming technology and will host global streaming event in 2023. Netflix made its announcement last Thursday that the legendary comedian, writer, director, and actor will perform live in a comedy special that will stream in early 2023.
“Chris Rock is one of the most iconic and important comedic voices of our generation,” Netflix’s vice president of stand-up and comedy formats, Robbie Praw, said in a statement in a press release.
This comedy special will be Rock’s second stand-up special on Netflix. His first comedy special was titled Chris Rock: Tamborine and made its debut in February 2018.
“We’re thrilled the entire world will be able to experience a live Chris Rock comedy event and be a part of Netflix history. This will be an unforgettable moment and we’re so honored that Chris is carrying this torch,” said Praw.
Black Informant shared a tweet from their Twitter account regarding Rock’s comedy special:
“People expect me to talk about the bullshit, I’m not going to talk about it right now, I’ll get to it eventually, on Netflix,” Rock said, via Deadline.
It is anticipated that the comedian will discuss the infamous slap that took place earlier this year. For the unaware audience, Rock was slapped by Will Smith (The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, Men in Black) at the Oscars for cracking a joke against Smith’s wife, Jada Pinkett Smith (Scream 2, Collateral), who suffers from alopecia, regarding her baldness. The comedian had already mentioned before that he would not be discussing the slap until he sees a check with his name on it, according to New York Post.
“I’m OK. I have a whole show, and I’m not talking about that until I get paid,” Rock told his audience during a comedy set at Fantasy Springs Resort Casino in Indio, California, in April.
As per Netflix, the streaming service is the established home for all things comedy.
