Chris Messina Confirmed to Appear in Season 6 of ‘The Mindy Project’

Mindy Lahiri may have found a new husband, but it looks like Mindy and Danny shippers might not have seen the last of the once perfect couple. TVLine reported on Thursday that Messina, who plays Danny, will return for the upcoming sixth and final season of The Mindy Project.

While speaking at the Television Critics Association’s summer press tour on Thursday, The Mindy Project‘s creator and star Mindy Kaling announced that Messina will return to the series following his departure as a series regular in Season 4. Better yet, Kaling promised that the actor will return for “multiple episodes” in the upcoming 10 episode season.

Executive producer Matt Warburton previewed what fans can expect the dynamic to be between Mindy and Danny. “One thing we can promise the audience is a little bit of clarity about where they stand,” he said. Kaling then added, “They’re both married to other people, so we went into the [final] season with that [complication], which is fun and delicious.”

Kaling also took the time to explain what her goals for the final season are. “We aren’t super interested in [tying everything up in a bow],” Kaling revealed. “We’re trying to avoid [that], while also leaving the audience with the sense that [Mindy] had some growth.” While Kaling and her character are both hopeless romantics, she doesn’t want fans to expect a certain kind of happy ending for the characters they’ve grown to love during the past seasons. “Happily ever after’ can sometimes be romantic happiness, [but it also] can be a feeling of contentment about your life as a professional person and as a mother,” she said.

The Mindy Project has been a hotspot for well known celebrities to appear on and Season 6 will be no exception. In the past actors like Seth Rogen, James Franco, Ed Helms and Seth Meyers have all guest starred on the series. During the panel it was revealed that Modern Family actress Julie Bowen will guest star as a “rival mother” to Mindy in one of the final episodes.

Kaling also revealed to the reporters at the panel that she contemplated creating a spinoff about Garret Dillahunt and Fortune Feimster’s southern sibling characters, but ultimately decided against the idea. While the spinoff was nothing but an idea, Kaling assured reporters that something great came out of the idea. “We just have such a good [series] finale.”

Season 6 of The Mindy Project will premiere on Hulu on Tuesday, September 12.
