The Chinese streaming platform Huanxi Premium has acquired the exclusive rights to Quiz, the U.K. hit limited series directed by Stephen Frears (The Queen). Originally produced by ITV from Sony Pictures Television, the three 1-hour long episodes will be released to the streamer in early 2021, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
The acquisition of Quiz adds to the growing list of international programming on the streamer with many of them coming from the U.K. Quiz will be among ITV hits like Bodyguard, Snowpiercer and the BBC miniseries World on Fire.
Quiz was written and created by British playwright James Graham (Privacy) and tells the 2001 story of former army major Charles Ingram as he goes on to unexpectedly win the 1-million-pound jackpot on Who Wants to Be a Millionaire? Soon after the victory, Graham was pursued with criminal charges under the suspicion that him and his wife cheated through the show. The series is based on Graham’s play under the same name which was originally based on the book Bad Show: The Quiz, the Cough, the Millionaire Major by Bob Woffinden and James Plaskett, via The Hollywood Reporter.
In May of this year, the show was met with a successful premiere for the U.K., as well as in the U.S. through AMC. The miniseries stars Matthew Macfadyen (Succession), Michael Sheen (Frost/Nixon), Helen McCrory (Peaky Blinders) and Sian Clifford (Fleabag).
