‘Chewing Gum’ Creator Michaela Coel Gets 12-Episode HBO Show ‘I May Destroy You,’ Official Trailer Released

I May Destroy You, created by Michaela Coel (Chewing Gum) will premiere June 7 on HBO. The show will assess changes in the dating landscape, according to Indie Wire.

The official synopsis for I May Destroy You reads: “Set in London, where gratification is only an app away, the story centers on Arabella (Coel), a carefree, self-assured Londoner with a group of great friends, a boyfriend in Italy, and a burgeoning writing career. But when her drink is spiked, she must question and rebuild every element of her life,” via Indie Wire.

Weruche Opia (Sliced) and Paapa Essiedu (Press) will play Arabella’s best friends, Terry and Kwame respectively. Supporting cast will include Lewis Reeves (Crazyhead) as David, Harriet Webb (Scarborough) as Theodora and Marouane Zotti (The Red Door) as Biagio among others.

As written by Tambay Obenson, “HBO is certainly no stranger to envelope-pushing series,” via Indie Wire. Obenson’s article also mentioned the fact that Coel “herself revealed during her MacTaggart lecture at the 2018 Edinburgh International Television Festival that she was sexually assaulted during the writing of “Chewing Gum,” opening up about the “life-changing” experience during her keynote speech,” via Indie Wire. The themes of sexual assault and content throughout I May Destroy You derive from Coel’s past experience.

The first of 12 half-hour episodes will premiere June 7 at 10:30 p.m. CT, according to the HBO TV schedule. The trailer for I May Destroy You can be seen on the network’s YouTube channel.
