American actress Chase Sui Wonders (The Studio, Bodies Bodies Bodies) will make a guest appearance on Hulu’s upcoming reboot of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, according to a Monday report by Deadline’s Antonia Blyth. Wonders obtained the role after developing a friendship with lead actress Sarah Michelle Gellar (Cruel Intentions, Scooby Doo) on the set of another remake, last month’s I Know What You Did Last Summer.
“Sarah Michelle Geller is just such a force to be reckoned with,” Wonders told Deadline. “We became fast friends on I Know What You Did Last Summer. She’s an incredible woman and just a cool person, and she asked me if I wanted to do it. Then she told me about Chloé Zhao directing and [Nora and Lilla Zuckerman] showrunning. And then Eric Kissack, who is actually our editor on The Studio, is also editing the Buffy series.”
Per Deadline, Wonders will portray a character known as Shirley, though she remained hush-hush on the details. Given the original Buffy series’ monster-of-the-week formula, it seems likely that Shirley will be some kind of supernatural entity, but nothing is certain yet. Regardless, Wonders was intent on preparing for the role — so much so she binged all seven seasons of the original vampire-hunting teen drama soon after she booked it. “I’ve watched the entirety of the series, so I’m really living inside Sunnydale at the moment,” she commented. “It’s very cool and surreal to see young Sarah Michelle just be a total badass, which I knew, but it’s cool to see that she’s been a badass for a long time.”
Wonders also bonded with showrunner Chloé Zhao (Nomadland, Eternals) on-set. “Upon first meeting her,” Wonders continued to Deadline, “I was like, this woman is very, very heart-on-her- sleeve, and she has a very unique approach to filmmaking and the process of it all. You can tell that her roots are in this very naturalistic indie filmmaking with non-actors. The Rider was a total masterpiece. To get to work with her on this canon, pulpy sort of fantastical series is really fun. She’s incredible.”
The reboot of Buffy The Vampire Slayer, which will see Gellar training high schooler Nova, played by Ryan Kiera Armstrong (Skeleton Crew, American Horror Story), to become Sunnydale’s next Slayer, will release on Hulu at a later unknown date.
