CBS Opts Not to Extend the Episode Order for ‘Pure Genius’

Another show has joined Conviction, Frequency, No Tomorrow and Notorious in the “shows that are not likely to return for another season” club. Deadline has reported that Pure Genius, the new medical drama from CBS that stars Augustus Prew and Dermot Mulroney and was created by Jason Katims, will not receive any additional episodes past the 13 that were originally ordered.

The show centers on a tech billionaire (Prew) who has built a hospital with cutting edge technology that allows for patients to receive care that they might not have originally received in a regular hospital.

With the initial episode order not being extended, the show will officially wrap production on Dec. 15 when episode 13 has been finished.

All of the episodes will continue to air on the network, though it’s unclear at this time whether the show will remain in its timeslot or will be moved to a less competitive night to finish out its season.

Pure Genius has aired four episodes so far and hasn’t done very well in the ratings. Its series premiere, which aired on Oct. 27, only managed a 1.0 rating in the key 18 to 49 demographic, and its subsequent episodes have only scored a 0.9 rating in the 18 to 49 demographic, according to TV by the Numbers.

Pure Genius is the lowest rated show of the CBS freshman shows and the second lowest rated show on the network overall. Elementary is currently the lowest rated show with an average rating of 0.7 in the 18 to 49 demographic.

This is the first freshman series at CBS this season to have their episode order capped. Man With A Plan, Kevin Can Wait, Bull, The Great Indoors and MacGyver, the five new shows at CBS, have all been picked up for full seasons already. CBS’ other medical drama, sophomore series Code Black, was given three extra episodes this season, going from 13 episodes originally planned to 16 episodes.

CBS also has four shows that need placed on the schedule for the midseason, including Doubt, Training Day, Ransom and Criminal Minds: Beyond Borders, that could potentially take Pure Genius‘ timeslot, though CBS might want to pair Criminal Minds and Criminal Minds: Beyond Borders together like they did last season.

Pure Genius airs Thursday nights at 10 p.m. on CBS.
