CBS will retain the right to distribute game shows Wheel of Fortune and Jeopardy! throughout the duration of the network’s legal battle with Sony Pictures Television, a court ruled on Wednesday according to Deadline. The ruling serves as the latest development in the abiding struggle between the two companies over distribution rights which began last winter.
For more than 20 years, Jeopardy! and Wheel of Fortune have been collaborative efforts between Sony Pictures Television, which films and produces both series on their lot in Culver City, California (via TheWrap), and CBS, which acts as the programs’ distributor. However, in November last year, Sony Pictures sued the distributor, alleging that CBS had violated their contract and engaged in “self-dealing” by undervaluing the game shows while licensing them internationally at below-market values. The resultant trial between the two networks has since developed into a lengthy trial with no end in sight, putting both groups in… well, jeopardy.
Judges Gonzalo Martinez, Natalie Stone, and John Segal of California’s Second Appellate Court ruled on April 10th of this year that Sony Pictures was not required to hand over new episodes of Jeopardy! and Fortune to CBS while the contract was being litigated. Barely more than a month later, though, that same court has stayed their previous decision after an appeal by CBS, via Deadline.
“Pending disposition of this appeal,” reads the court’s ruling, which comes courtesy of Deadline, the trial court’s order of April 10, 2025 finding that “Sony can begin distributing the Shows and need not deliver episodes to CBS” is hereby stayed, including all matters embraced therein or affected thereby by the trial court’s order.” Neither CBS nor Sony Pictures Television responded to Deadline’s request for comment.
Deadline did not report when the breach-of-contract dispute between the companies was expected to conclude; for the time being, though, new episodes of Jeopardy! and Wheel of Fortune will continue to premiere nightly on ABC.
