CBS’ hit comedy Ghosts will be brewing up a holiday special, but not for Halloween. TVLine reports the show will air a Christmas special with a tinge of rom-com sentiments in December. The hour-long episode may also include some cast members breaking into yuletide musical numbers.
“There’s a lot of singing in the Christmas special,” executive producer Joe Port (Me, Myself, and I, New Girl) told TVLine. The episode will see show leads Sam and Jay invite Jay’s sister, Bela, over for the holidays. Bela will be accompanied by a male friend. As Sam sees some romantic holiday magic in the air for Bela and her guest, the various spirits that share the home have other plans for Jay’s sister.
Based on the BBC original sitcom, Ghosts follows a married couple as they purchase their first home. However, they are unaware the house is occupied by a variety of ghosts. That is until Sam, played by Rose McIver (iZombie, Petals on the Wind) suffers a head injury that leaves her able to see and speak with the spirits. Her husband, Utkarsh Ambudkar’s (Brittany Runs A Marathon, Free Guy) Jay, and others are unaware of the unwelcome house guests.
The special will see the return of Jay’s sister played by Punam Patel (Special, Hot Mess Holiday) according to TVLine. Patel first appeared in episode 12 of season one, aptly entitled “Jay’s Sister.” Patel will join the rest of the colorful cast which includes Brandon Scott Jones (Senior Year, The Other Two) as Issac; Danielle Pinnock (Thundercats Roar, Young Sheldon) as Alberta; Asher Grodman (Chicago Med, House of Cards) as Trevor; Richie Moriarty (How to Be Single, The Dishwasher) as Pet; Devan Chandler Long (Dirt, Doom Patrol) as Thorfinn; Rebecca Wisocky (For All Mankind, Blonde) as Hetty; Román Zaragoza (Shadow Wolves, Studio City) as Sasappis; and, Sheila Carrasco (Me and My Grandma, A Lot of Nothing) as Flower.
For fans who enjoyed Ambudkar’s musical talent in the Pitch Perfect franchise, fellow executive producer Joe Wiseman reassured that Jay would not be joining the show’s chorus.
“He’s an incredible improvisational rapper, like world class,” Joe Wiseman (The Last O.G., Last Man Standing) told TVLine. “We would love [to have him sing on the show]” but “We currently don’t have plans for that.” Wiseman also referenced Ambudkar being a member of Freestyle Love Supreme, an improv hip-hop troupe created by industry musical maestro, Lin-Manuel Miranda (His Dark Materials, In the Heights).
Ghosts holiday special will air on December 15 from 8-9 p.m. ET on CBS.
