Grab your best Diane Lockhart-inspired bejeweled brooch and gather around the computer screen. CBS has released the first teaser trailer for The Good Fight and, according to Variety, fans are going to be in for a bumpy, “nasty” ride.
The trailer opens with Diane (Christine Baranski, who is returning to play the role she originated in the original show, The Good Wife), giving a speech or some sort of pep talk to someone, presumably her goddaughter (Rose Leslie) who she’s mentoring before a financial scam wipes out all of their savings. To gain back her reputation, Diana goes to work with Lucca Quinn (Cush Jumbo, who joined The Good Wife in its final season) at a large Chicago law firm after being forced out of Lockhart & Lee.
Even though Alicia Florrick (Julianna Margulies) isn’t likely to appear in the spinoff series, which takes place about a year after the events of the finale of The Good Wife, many other characters from the original series will be in the revival, including Gary Cole, who plays Diane’s husband, and Sarah Steele, who played Marissa Gold.
Justin Bartha, known for his roles in National Treasure and The Hangover, will also be on the show, likely as a romantic prospect for Lucca.
It was also recently announced by Variety that Carrie Preston, who played everyone’s zany lawyer Elsbeth Tascioni, will be appearing in the spinoff for a guest arc. Details about what her character will be doing in the spinoff haven’t been released, but if it’s anything like The Good Wife, Elsbeth will be there when any of the Chicago lawyers get themselves in a tight spot they can’t get out of.
Since Preston last appeared on The Good Wife, her NBC comedy Crowded was canceled in May 2016 due to low ratings. She also wrapped up a miniseries on ABC entitled When We Rise Up, which focuses on the gay rights movement.
The Good Fight will first air on CBS on Feb. 19. After the series premiere, episodes will be released weekly on CBS All Access exclusively. The Good Fight marks the first original scripted drama for CBS’ streaming site.
