El Zorro will be back on screen after almost twenty years. According to Deadline, a new Zorro series has been in development since late 2021. It was recently announced via Deadline that Bryan Cogman (Game of Thrones) will serve as showrunner for the show alongside writing and executive producing the reimagining of el Zorro for Disney. The new Zorro show will star Wilmer Valderrama (NCIS, That ‘70s Show) who will also executive produce.
The new Disney+ series “will follow Diego De La Vega, a privileged caballero who returns to his hometown of El Pueblo de Los Angeles after a family tragedy. Upon his return, he discovers a culture of corruption and injustice has taken over his hometown. This will lead him to take on the mantle of the masked vigilante Zorro, America’s first true superhero.”
According to Deadline, the new Zorro series is being described as “a bold reimagining of Disney’s classic series for a modern audience. It will be an epic adventure rooted in California’s rich and diverse history, with humor, sinister intrigue, romantic entanglements, and swashbuckling thrills.”
Gary Marsh (Zombies: The Re-Animated Series, Calendar Girl) and John Gertz (The Mask of Zorro, The Legend of Zorro) serve as executive producers alongside Valderrama and Cogman.
Cogman has been busy in the TV industry spending ten years, which turned into eight seasons, working on HBO’s hit fantasy series Game of Thrones. Cogman served as both co-executive producer and writer for the show where he was in charge of penning eleven episodes. For his work in bringing Westeros to life, Cogman received four Emmy Awards, and a Hugo Award, among other awards and nominations.
In recent years he has been working on Amazon Prime’s Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power as a consulting producer during the first season. Cogman has also been in charge of writing the screenplay for the upcoming remake of Disney’s The Sword in the Stone.
The most recent version of Zorro was portrayed by Antonio Banderas (Shrek franchise, Uncharted) in The Mask of Zorro and its sequel The Legend of Zorro. He starred in the movies alongside Anthony Hopkins (The Silence of the Lambs, The Son) and Catherine Zeta-Jones (Wednesday, Queen America).
The reimagined series of el Zorro is still in pre-production and no estimated release date has been given. The Antonio Banderas’ Zorro movies are available to stream on Netflix.
