British series Rivals received the Best Drama Series award at the 53rd International Emmy awards on Monday in New York City, Deadline reports.
Hosted by Kelly Ripa (All My Children, Marvin’s Room) and Mark Consuelos (Riverdale, Cop Out), the awards hosted 64 nominees from a record 26 countries, with 16 categories of awards, according to Deadline. The UK dominated the showcase, winning most of the awards with winners in seven categories.
Per Deadline, the UK also took home the awards for Best Comedy Series with Ludwig and the Best Performance by an Actress award went to Anna Maxwell Martin (Gavin & Stacy, Philomena) for Until I Kill You, while Spain’s Yo, Adicto [I, Addict]’s Oriol Pla (Petra, Uncertain Glory) won Best Performance by an Actor.
There were also special awards handed out in addition to the competitive honors, with Disney Entertainment chairman Dana Walden being recognized with the International Emmy Founders Award and João Roberto Marinho, president of Brazil’s Grupo Globo, receiving the International Emmy Directorate Award, reports Deadline.
Directed by Elliot Hegarty (Ted Lasso, Cheaters), Dee Koppang O’Leary (The Crown, The Split), and Alexandra Brodski (Somewhere Boy, Joy), Rivals is based on the 1988 novel of the same name by Jilly Cooper (Riders, Jackanory). According to an official synopsis provided by Deadline, the series is set in the fictional, Cotswolds-esque county of Rutshire, and charts the animosity between the new-money Lord Tony Baddingham and aristocratic Rupert Campbell-Black, a rivalry that seeps into the Corinium TV station owned by Baddingham just as the world of commercial TV is taking off.
Cooper, who also executive produced the series, passed away in early October after a fall, according to Deadline. After successful run on Disney+, the series was renewed for a second season with four more episodes ordered than in the first.
The BBC’s dramedy Ludwig is created by Mark Brotherhood (Mount Pleasant, Death in Paradise) and concerns John ‘Ludwig’ Taylor, a reclusive puzzle-setter who becomes an unlikely detective when his twin brother goes missing, according to an official synopsis provided by Deadline. The show stars David Mitchell (Outsiders, Peep Show) as the title character and Martin as Ludwig’s sister-in-law.
Earlier this month Deadline reported that a U.S. remake of the show was in the works by Big Talk Studios following its success as well as that of other similar shows such as Only Murders in the Building.
