Jonathan Bailey (Wicked, Fellow Travelers, Crashing), Hayley Atwell (Black Mirror, Cinderella, Ant-Man), and Eddie Marson (The Gentleman, Hancock, Wrath of Man) are now joining the cast of Netflix’s Heartstopper season three, Comicbook.com reports. Atwell will be playing the character of Diane, Nick’s aunt. The Bridgerton star will be portraying Jack Maddox, who is Charlie’s celebrity crush. Marson, instead, will be playing Geoff, the therapist who will be helping Charlie. He is an important character in the graphic novels that inspired the series. The series creator Alice Oseman (This Winter: A Heartstopper Novella, Nick and Charlie), in an exclusive interview with Netflix’s TUDUM, stated that there will be some slight changes from the graphic novels in the third season.
“I’m so excited because it’s going to feel like a really different season and I love that we are doing something different,” Oseman shared, via Comicbook.com. “It would be easy to be like, ‘Oh, Heartstopper Season 3, let’s just do the same kind of thing that we’ve always done. People like it.’ But we are doing something that will feel very different and people will be surprised and I can’t wait.”
The last moments of the second season of Heartstopper left fans in shock, according to Comicbook.com, as the two boys are resolving some tension in their relationship. Oseman shared that everything is alright, though, and answers will be coming for fans. TUDUM was able to interview with the Heartstopper creator to speak how the writing team has created more stories in season three.
“Season 2 ended with Nick beginning to understand the extent of Charlie’s mental health issues, and it’s this that will drive the story through Season 3,” Oseman explained, via Comicbook.com “While Heartstopper will always celebrate the joyful and point towards hope, I’m really excited that we are allowing the tone of the show to mature alongside our beloved characters growing up. Mental health, sex, university ambitions, and more: Nick, Charlie, and the Heartstopper teens are getting older, learning more about themselves and each other, and experiencing new desires, new fears, and new joys as they approach adulthood.”
The show has been widely popular, and it has received positive reviews by fans of the original graphic novels and critics alike, according to Comicbook.com. Patrick Walters (The Essex Serpent, The End) and Oseman were able to talk with TUDUM about how the show is still popular, even if season three is still currently filming.
Oseman wrote in an Instagram post, via Comicbook.com, “I hope that it just makes people smile and brightens their day — but I also hope that it inspires, particularly, young queer people to believe that they can find happiness and find romance and find friendship.”
“We put so much love into the making of Heartstopper so to reassemble the team for two more seasons is a dream come true,” Walters agreed, via Comicbook.com. “I’m forever grateful to Alice Oseman for entrusting us with this beautiful, unique story that at its core seeks to uplift the next generation of young LGBTQ+ people. Stay tuned!”
The first two seasons of Heartstopper are currently available for streaming on Netflix.
