Bridgerton’s Jess Brownell (Inventing Anna, Scandal), who is the series’ showrunner, has addressed theory that fans have been speculating for a while about one of the main character’s future storylines, Comicbook.com reports. Refinery29 spoke to Brownell about the theory of possible queer relationships blossoming in the show. Between fans, the characters that are most leaning toward this theory are the two siblings, Benedict Bridgerton and Eloise Bridgerton. Brownell explained to R29, “So we are exploring queer love stories across the next couple of seasons.”
According to Comicbook.com, this possibility would be totally different shift from the series’ usual storylines. Specifically, in the spinoff show Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story, there has been a hint of that theory becoming true. Brownell was open to the idea when asked in the same interview with R29.
“Yeah, absolutely,” Brownell shared, via Comicbook.com. “I think this is a show about the many ways in which people love. So it only feels right to show all the ways in which people love, including queer love.”
“I don’t want to say exactly how that plays out,” the showrunner added, via Comicbook.com. “But it was important to me to foreground queer love and to tell queer stories and tell stories about queer joy as well.” The semi-fanciful setting for Bridgerton is going to help them get to where they want narratively. “We have the privilege of living in this fantasy world which means we can push back against some of the reality of what happened in the 1800s.”
For the fourth season, according to Comicbook.com, fans are still speculating who will be the main lead couple. Claudia Jessie (Doctors, Line of Duty, Their Finest), who portrays Eloise, was asked by Digital Spy if the book focused on Eloise’s story will be the chosen one.
“If ever that happens, I’ve had a good old run up,” Jessie explained without giving any hints, via Comicbook.com. “So I feel like it’s the people that have come before that have shown us all how to do it. Phoebe [Dynevor] took it on really beautifully. She did such an incredible job kicking off this show. And Johnny [Jonathan Bailey] and Simone [Ashley] and obviously Regé [Regé-Jean Page] from season one as well and then Nicola [Coughlan] and Luke [Newton].”
“More than anything as well, this show is an ensemble piece filled with so many people,” the actress added, via Comicbook.com. “So I really feel like each season everyone gets an opportunity to shine anyway. But yeah, I feel grateful for the run-up really, but I won’t tell you anything. Because I don’t know. I don’t actually know the answer.”
The first two seasons of Bridgerton are currently streaming on Netflix. The first part of season three will be released on May 16, and the second part on June 13.
