The character of Spencer James, played by Daniel Ezra (Murdered by My Boyfriend, A Discovery of Witches), came to a close at the end of All American season six. The show is now making major changes to its main cast ahead of season seven. According to Deadline, the CW series will see the return of three previous series regulars and the addition of four new ones.
Returning actors for season seven include Bre-Z (Down For Whatever, Empire) as Coop, Greta Onieogou as Layla Keating (Heartland, Anne With An E) and Michael Evans Behling (A Cinderella Story, The Manny) as Jordan Baker. Antonio J. Bell (Nigerian Prince, Blood Money), who plays Khalil, and Alexis Chikaeze (Miss Juneteenth, Rap Sh!t), who plays Amina, the daughter of Kareem Grimes’ (For the Love of Jason, The Vince Staples Show) Preach, have been upped to series regulars. Osy Ikhile (Jet Trash, Daphne) and Nathaniel McIntyre (Magic Camp, David Makes Man) have also joined the series’ main cast as new characters.
According to Deadline, the new season’s official logline reads, “Season 7 is taking it back to where it all began: Beverly Hills High and South Crenshaw High. It’s the same heart, same NFL dream, same crosstown rivalry, same messy hormones, ushered in by a new generation of LA teens, a new Beverly Coach and our OG vortex fam, who are surprised to find they’re supposed to be the responsible adults now.”
Ikhile will play Cassius Jeremy, Beverly High’s newest football coach, who has freshly relocated from Oakland with his quarterback son, Kingston, played by McIntyre. The new season will explore the father and son’s complicated relationship, Coach Jeremy’s efforts to take down South Crenshaw High’s football program and Kingston’s journey navigating high school.
At the end of season six, the show’s original protagonist, Spencer James, makes it to the NFL, wins the Super Bowl and marries Olivia Baker, played by Samantha Logan (The Empty Man, 13 Reasons Why). With the character’s arc wrapping up, Ezra has departed from the series, but he is expected to return in season seven for guest appearances and to direct an episode.
All American was renewed for a 13-episode seventh season on the CW in June. Its spinoff series, All American: Homecoming, is ending with its third season, with the finale scheduled for September 30.
