Terry Winter, the series creator, promises to bring an “exciting and powerful conclusion.”
The HBO network announced at the Television Critics Association press tour that the fifth season of Boardwalk Empire will be the last of the series.
“It has been an incredible honor to bring this powerful and groundbreaking series to our subscribers,” said Michael Lombardo, the programming president. According to The Hollywood Reporter, he also added, “Terry Winter has created one for the ages.”
Winter’s relationship with HBO dates from the time he wrote for The Sopranos. His work include writing for The Wolf of Wall Street and he premiered Boardwalk Empire in 2010. “We’re thrilled to get the go-ahead for a fifth season of Boardwalk Empire,” said Winter. “After much discussion with my creative team and HBO, we’ve decided to wrap up the series after such a great run and look forward to bringing it to a powerful and exciting conclusion.”
The series, which star Steve Buscemi as “Nucky” Thompson, has won numerous awards, including five awards last September and it recorded more wins than any other scripted television program.
