The popular dystopian drama series, Black Mirror, will return for a sixth season at Netflix, according to Deadline. This will be the first time the show will be releasing new episodes since June 2019 when the series premiered its fifth season.
According to Deadline, the show’s upcoming sixth season will likely follow the same release pattern as the fifth season, when the show reduced the number of episodes to three but extended the length of each episode to have feature film length. However, Variety reports that this season will have more episodes than the fifth.
Variety also reports that this season will be even more cinematic in scope. This upcoming season will be the first season under creator Charlie Booker and Annabel Jones’ new production banner, Broke And Bones. Their new banner was established after they left their old production company, House Of Tomorrow, which they left in January 2020.
Once Booker and Jones created Broke And Bones, Netflix immediately invested into the company in a huge deal where they acquired parts of the company in a five-year deal that could total $100 million, according to Variety.
There was worry that Black Mirror may not return to Netflix after the rights to the show stayed with Endemol Shine Group, which is the parent company to House Of Tomorrow, and was acquired by Banijay Group in the summer of 2020. In order for Booker and Jones to continue producing the series, a deal had to be worked out with Banijay Group. A deal was reached and the rights to the show went back to Netflix, according to Variety.
It is currently unclear as to when the upcoming sixth season of Black Mirror will premiere. It is also unclear as to who will appear in the new season as the cast changes from season to season.
