‘Black Mirror’ Creator Charlie Brooker Shares Thoughts on AI Script Writing

The human mind is complex. Couple that with the ability to write; our creative nature can run wild, which could be bad for artificial intelligence but good for keeping writers employed. Or, at least, Black Mirror creator Charlie Brooker thinks so. According to Entertainment Weekly, Brooker spoke at SXS Sydney and expressed no genuine regard for AI taking over the writing world.

Brooker opened up about letting ChatGPT, the extremely popular AI chatbox, write a script for his Emmy award-winning Netflix show, Black Mirror.

As he first started reading the script, he was impressed at how well the chatbox worked. He then felt differently as he continued reading, thinking that there was nothing to worry about because “Computers aren’t as f- – – ed up as people!”

“It’s just emulating something,” said Brooker via Entertainment Weekly, “It’s hoovered up every description of every Black Mirror episode, presumably from Wikipedia and other things that people have written, and it’s just sort of vomiting that back at me. It’s pretending to be something it isn’t capable of being.”

He also said, “But I can’t quite see it replacing messy people.”

Unsurprisingly, humans, or ‘messy people,’ have let their creativity reach new heights with their work, mainly in the entertainment world.

Brooker has messed around with the show’s sixth season and AI in the past, saying the script he got back did read “plausibly” initially. Then, he realized all its flaws. He accepted that AI could be here indefinitely and said it could be beneficial.

The WGA also sides with this idea to negotiate an end to the writers’ strike. They have offered guidelines in their contract for the limits and best executions of when to implement AI into mainstream media.

Despite Brooker creating a sci-fi, almost dystopian show with elements concerning AI, perhaps it’s possible that he could be overlooking its full power.
