The upcoming installment of Ryan Murphy’s crime anthology series titled American Crime Story: Impeachment will be adding former American Horror Story star Billy Eichner to its cast. Eichner will be playing the role of Matt Drudge in the series, founder of the Drudge Report, which was the first outlet to break the news of the Clinton scandal in 1998.
The news of Eichner being cast in the series comes just after an announcement from FX chairman John Landgraf that the Impeachment series would be pushed back from its original premiere date. Though the series was initially set to premiere in September of this year before the 2020 election, Landgraf confirmed that the show would not be wrapping production until October, and the final premiere date is still uncertain. American Crime Story: Impeachment was initially criticized for planning to air directly before the election, though Landgraf insisted that these criticisms did not affect the decision to delay the series, citing instead Ryan Murphy’s busy schedule.
As for Eichner, the actor and comedian will be joining a cast featuring Beanie Feldstein as Monica Lewinsky, Clive Owen as Bill Clinton, Sarah Paulson as Linda Tripp, and Annaleigh Ashford as Paula Jones. Eichner first broke into entertainment with his series Billy on the Street, a comedy show with Funny or Die where Eichner races through the streets of New York City and bombards strangers with hysterical questions, usually alongside a celebrity guest. Eichner has since appeared in a variety of shows and films, including Murphy’s American Horror Story and the 2019 adaptation of The Lion King.
Murphy and and series writer Sarah Burgess are drawing inspiration from the book A Vast Conspiracy: The Real Story of the Sex Scandal That Nearly Brought Down a President by Jeffrey Toobin. Murphy serves as executive producer for the series alongside Burgess, Nina Jacobson, Brad Simpson, Brad Falchuk, Larry Karaszewski, Scott Alexander, Alexis Martin Woodall, and Paulson. The new premiere date for Impeachment has not yet been announced.
