Bill! Bill! Bill! Bill!
Bill Nye, a man who locked himself in ’90s and ’00s kids’ hearts two decades ago, is gracing us with his presence again. In a recent post by Variety, it is confirmed that the heartwarming scientist will be launching his own Netflix show in the coming year.
Mr. Nye first entered the public eye when his first namesake show, Bill Nye the Science Guy, premiered in the 1990s. In this series, Nye made topics like science and engineering accessible and fun for a young audience. Not only did he star in the series, but Nye also created, produced, and wrote for the show, which ran for five successful seasons before ending.
Now, a mere twenty years or so later, Nye is back with a vengeance for his new program, Bill Nye Saves the World. Naturally because of his scientific roots (he is a legitimate scientist, after all!), the show will heavily feature science and how that affects politics, our lives, and even pop culture. Bill Nye the Science Guy was an excellent start to making science fun and applicable to our modern lives, but it seems Nye has an eye on a bigger demographic than ages 6-12.
The scientist is quoted as saying, “Since the start of the Science Guy show, I’ve been on a mission to change the world by getting people everywhere excited about the fundamental ideas in science. Today, I’m excited to be working with Netflix on a new show, where we’ll discuss the complex scientific issues facing us today, with episodes on vaccinations, genetically modified foods and climate change. With the right science and good writing, we’ll do our best to enlighten and entertain our audience. And, perhaps we’ll change the world a little.”
In his new series, Nye will have the opportunity to formally tackle issues close to his heart, such as genetically modified foods and global warming, the latter of which has been a source of major public issue for him. Nye has only recently changed his opinion on GMOs, but per his scientific ideals, has considered the matter formally and will no doubt bring these ideas to his show.
Bill Nye Saves The World is being produced by Bunim/Murray Productions, and Michael Naidus (The Late Late Show With Craig Ferguson) will be showrunning and executive producing the series. The writing staff appears to be an even measure between funny and logical, as writer/comedian Mike Drucker will be leading as the Head Comedy Writer and author, astronomer, and science buff Phil Plait will lend his knowledge as the Head Science Writer.
Bill Nye Saves The World is set to premiere in 2017.
