According to Deadline, the main theme of season five will be love and hate. Following through “No Nut November” to New Year’s Eve, the next season will introduce the lovebug and the hateworms, which can shift between the forms of a caterpillar or a butterfly. Nick’s lovebug, Walter (Goodman), will push Nick to pursue his feelings for Jessi (Jessi Klein) until Jessi rejects him, turning Walter into a hateworm which leads Nick into a dark path. Jessi’s lovebug, Sonya (Adlon), comes when Jessi gets closer to Ali, and she starts to wonder if she has feelings for her. Jessi and Ali’s close bond will then send Missy into a rage fueled by her hate worm Rochelle (Palmer). Jealousy, unrequited love, and new crushers will drive the season five narrative.
