Big Mouth, the Netflix animation from Nick Kroll, may have just dropped its third season, but it was just renewed for three more. The program was recently nominated for an Emmy in the Outstanding Animated Program category, marking the second time it’s been nominated by the Television Academy. Variety reports that the multi-year deal was made with the newly formed animation company Brutus Pink, a company composed primarily of Big Mouth creators.
Brutus Pink was recently developed with the idea of animated productions that are “adult, funny, and emotional.” Nick Kroll, Jennifer Flackett, Andrew Goldberg, and Mark Levin are the heads of the company and the main team behind Big Mouth. The deal stipulates that they will continue to create new animated series and films for Netflix. Together they released a joint statement, saying, “Netflix has given us the best creative experience imaginable, and we’ve been able to build an amazing community of talented writers, actors, producers and artists. We’re thrilled to be continuing with everyone for years to come.”
Meanwhile, Netflix’s head of adult animation, Mike Moon, says, “Big Mouth brilliantly captures the most awkward phase in a person’s life, puberty, in a hilarious yet heartwarming way. We couldn’t be more excited to continue our relationship with Brutus Pink and bring more stories, more humor, and more hormones to Netflix members around the world.”
Big Mouth, which has a strong fan following, is famously inspired by creators Kroll and Goldberg’s childhood. The series follows a group of semi-fictional friends and their totally fictional hormone monsters as they handle adolescence, budding sexualities, and general coming of age. Kroll provides many characters’ voices on the show, but he is also joined by a familiar, famous, and funny cast that includes John Mulaney, Jenny Slate, and Fred Armisen. Additional voices include Jessi Klein, Jason Mantzoukas, Jordan Peele, Paula Pell, Andrew Rannells, June Diane Raphael, Gina Rodriguez, and Maya Rudolph.
Big Mouth’s large renewal comes at an awkward time for adult animation. Tuca & Bertie, another Netflix animation, was recently cancelled after just one season. On entirely different platforms, there are rumors that the long-running, highly beloved Simpsons may make the switch from cable to streamer in the next few years.
All three seasons of Big Mouth are currently streaming on Netflix.
