In line with The Hollywood Reporter, Tyler Perry (Diary of a Mad Black Woman, Madea Goes To Jail) and BET are keeping up their successful business collaboration. Perry has signed a multi-year contract extension with BET Media Group, which includes the renewal of eight of his BET and BET+ streamer shows. Route 187, another new scripted series from Perry, has also been picked up by BET.
The Hollywood Reporter claims that Perry and the cable channel have agreed to a new, multi-year content partnership under which Perry will continue to write and produce hundreds more hours of content for BET as well as its streaming service, BET+. The agreement, which is valid through 2028, expands and deepens Perry’s previous relationship with the then-Viacom and now Paramount Global conglomerate, which he formed in 2017.
Perry also indicated interest in purchasing a majority share of BET during Paramount’s previous year-long consideration of spinning it off. In the end, the business decided against moving through with a sale, and Perry voiced dissatisfaction with the bidding procedure.
Perry and BET were still able to continue their partnership, according to The Hollywood Reporter, despite this. Renewals of BET+ series Zatima, Ruthless, All the Queen’s Men, and Bruh, as well as BET series Sistas, The Oval, Assisted Living, and House of Payne, are included in the new agreement. The agreement also requires Perry to create more original content for both BET+ and BET, with Route 187, his upcoming scripted series, premiering on BET+. The prolific writer, director, and producer also has a four-movie deal at Amazon and a film deal at Netflix. In February, they signed a first-look TV deal with the streaming service.
BET Media Group president and CEO ‘Scott Mills’ stated in a statement: “Tyler Perry is simply without rival as a creator of content that powerfully resonates with audiences across genres, formats, and platforms, Our programming partnership with Tyler — undoubtably the largest deal ever in the industry with a Black creator — has been hugely successful, delivering the number one series across all TV among Black audiences and five of the top 10 series on cable among Black viewers. We are thrilled to extend our extraordinary relationship with Tyler and to continue to be the home of the largest and most diverse collection of new Tyler Perry content for years to come.”
Perry commented: “Scott Mills and his team at BET have been incredibly supportive throughout our time working together, and I’m excited to continue bringing these stories to the screen. I’m grateful to our loyal audiences for watching week after week and engaging these stories.”
