German medical drama Berlin ER (originally titled KRANK Berlin) will continue at Apple TV+, according to Thursday report from Deadline. The series, which stars Haley Louise Jones (Momo, Dear Child) as Dr. Suzanna Parker, the beleaguered head of an overcrowded and underfunded Berlin hospital, premiered exclusively on the streaming network earlier this year.
The timing of Berlin’s renewal announcement is likely not a coincidence; the series won two coveted awards, Best Drama Series and Best Cinematography, at last night’s German Television Awards in Cologne (via Deadline). Jones also received a nomination for her performance in the series, as did co-star Slavko Popadic, who plays another doctor within the hospital.
Much like its main character struggles to have her reforms and orders taken seriously, Berlin ER spent a lot of time struggling for the attention it deserved. Per Deadline, German media company Sky Deutschland had originally been slated to produce the series, only to back away mid-production, setting the stage for German public broadcaster ZDF to swoop in and save the series. Apple TV+ would later come aboard offering additional funding in exchange for temporary exclusivity rights (Germans without access to the streaming network can catch the series on the ZDFneo app beginning next March).
Berlin joins the United Kingdom’s This Is Going To Hurt and The Pitt here in the States as the newest member of recent resurgence in ‘prestige’ medical dramas. As of September 11th, according to Deadline, no concrete information regarding season two of the series’ plot or casting has been released, but presumably Samuel Jefferson (The Boy in the Snow, Brothers), a former ER physician (via ShowSnob) who served as head writer for season one, will reprise his role. Other administrative positions include Henning Kamm (The Lamb, Futuro Beach), who acted as an executive producer, and director Viktor Jakovleski (Pandorum, Rave On).
Season two of Berlin ER will release at an unknown date on Apple TV+.
