Could The Office be making a comeback? Since the NBC show ended in 2013, there have been talks about a possible revamp. In a recent development from our last story, original showrunner Greg Daniels (King of the Hill, Parks and Recreation) has broken his silence to comment on the topic. According to Entertainment Weekly, Daniels could not confirm or deny the rumor in an interview with Collider.
“Well, I think that it’s very speculative,” said Daniels to Collider, “The fact that it kind of blew up based on one line in a puck piece was kind of cool, I guess, in the sense that the fans still care a lot.”
The “puck piece” that Daniels referenced is from an article written on the Puck News website. They claimed last month that “the Office reboot is poised to be formally announced when the Writers Guild of America strike officially ends.”
Daniels remained ominous about the possible project and that it was too early to discuss it further.
“The thing I would say is, when there’s something to announce, I will definitely announce it,” said Daniels.
In 2019, Entertainment Weekly sat down with Daniels to discuss this topic. He felt that The Office had a perfect ending and one that he wanted; he also said, “It’s completely an artistic whole.”
“But, that said, I don’t know, the cast every now and then talks about getting back together in some form, but I don’t see it being a reboot like the way Will & Grace was rebooted,” said Daniels.
The five-time Emmy-award-winning show streamed for nine seasons from 2005 to 2013. Within those years, it garnered millions of die-hard fans. It has been a launching point for several cast members to become major stars in Hollywood.
Mindy Kaling (The Mindy Project, Never Have I Ever), who played Kelly Kapoor on the show, has been in the limelight and has found great success with her comedy series. Also, John Krasinski (Jack Ryan, Monsters University), who played Jim Halpert, has had the same effect and is a demanded director after his work on the A Quiet Place films.
There is still a connection to the show between Jenna Fischer (Splitting Up Together, Six Feet Under) and Angela Kinsey (The Hotwives, Bad Judge), who portrayed Pam Beesly and Angela Martin, respectively. They have hosted a recap podcast called Office Ladies for four years.
Leslie David Baker (Still the King, Living the Dream), who played Stanley, even attempted to crowdfund a spinoff based on his character.
Despite the uncertain future of the show’s revival, fans and former cast members are continuing to keep it alive. So, if it is rebooted, it’s safe to speculate most of the cast will return.
