Batwoman will be taking on a new direction for its season 2. The series will be abandoning main character Kate Kane played by Ruby Rose (Orange is the New Black) after her leaving the series, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
The new character is supposedly named “Ryan Wilder” according to Decider and is described as a woman in her mid-20s who “is about to become Batwoman.” The CW confirmed in a statement they would cast a member of the LGBTQ community in the title role, such as Rose in season 1.
“She’s likable, messy, a little goofy and untamed. She’s also nothing like Kate Kane, the woman who wore the batsuit before her,” the notice reads, according to Decider. “With no one in her life to keep her on track, Ryan spent years as a drug-runner, dodging the GCPD and masking her pain with bad habits. A girl who would steal milk for an alley cat could also kill you with her bare hands, Ryan is the most dangerous type of fighter: highly skilled and wildly undisciplined. An out lesbian. Athletic. Raw. Passionate. Fallible. And very much not your stereotypical All-American hero.”
Batwoman premiered in 2019 with Rose starring as Kane, a trained street fighter with a passion for social justice. The show made headlines being the first show with a lesbian superhero. Rose announced her departure from the show on May 19, surprising many fans of the show. She stated on an instagram post, “wasn’t an easy decision, but those who know, know…”
Amongst countless other shows, Batwoman ended their season early due to the COVID-19 pandemic, completing 20 out of the 22 called for episodes ending on May 17. There is no current news on dates for the next season.
