Disney+ is getting a new kind of series added to the mix. According to Deadline, the network will welcome a natural history series entitled A Real Bug’s Life based on the Pixar movie A Bug’s Life. Awkwafina (Crazy Rich Asians, Awkwafina Is Nora from Queens) is tied to the project as the narrator.
In addition to producing Tiny World on Apple TV+ narrated by Paul Rudd (Ant-Man and the Wasp, The Perks of Being a Wallflower), Plimsoll Productions is also producing A Real Bug’s Life.
Awkwafina is only one of the big names that have migrated to natural history narration and, as per Deadline, she “created a new kind of script, part-narrator, part-visceral reaction, part-bug,” stated A Real Bug’s Life showrunner Bill Markham (Wildest Latin America, Earth Odyssey with Dylan Dreyer).
“Inspired by the masterpiece that is A Bug’s Life, we approached every film, every scene, by asking ‘what would Pixar do?’,” said Markham via Deadline. A Bug’s Life was so popular because it presented every day, overlooked even disliked bugs as engaging characters with relatable problems, then followed their extraordinary adventures as they battled to overcome them.”
According to Deadline, A Real Bug’s Life is set to be shot in 4K HDR, yet Markham states that the series will be made special “primarily by the lenses – a new generation of probe lenses that allows us to get down to bug level.”
The series is set to premiere on Disney+ tomorrow Jan. 24th, and is produced by Plimsoll and National Geographic. Executive producers on board are Grant Mansfield (Hostile Planet, Secret Millionaire), Tom Hugh-Jones (Human Planet, Tiny World) and Martha Holmes (One Life, Wildlife Specials). Helen Williamson (A Real Bug’s Life) is slated to be co-showrunner alongside Markham.
