Avatar: Seven Havens only just premiered, and it’s already setting up some big promises. Series co-creator Michael Dante DiMartino (Avatar Aang: The Last Airbender, The Legend of Korra) sat down with CBR and revealed that the show is working towards a “big, big” finale like Avatar: The Last Airbender.
“I would just say it’s more kind of the Avatar: [The Last Airbender] model, where we kind of plotted out the big arc for the girls in this world,” DiMartino said. “Each book has its own themes and its own adventures, but it’s more like Avatar with one big journey. The big, big finale.”
While Avatar: The Last Airbender followed one overarching story arc, The Legend of Korra followed self-contained story arcs for each of its four seasons. That’s what DiMartino is referring to when he says it’s more of the “Avatar: [The Last Airbender] model”.
But The Legend of Korra still has a big influence on Avatar: Seven Havens. In fact, DiMartino revealed that the idea for Seven Havens spawned from a Korra project that ultimately did not get produced: “It was sort of embedded in the cool concept of [Seven Havens]. When Bryan and I started Avatar Studios, we were developing multiple projects, and some of the ideas for Korra [in Seven Havens] came from a Korra thing we were developing. So we kind of knew what had taken place, what caused the cataclysm, so we took some of those ideas and wove them into the series.”
DiMartino also revealed that there’s more to the Cataclysm and Korra’s role in it than has been shown thus far. “That’s part of the big mystery of the show — what happened during Korra’s time, how she was involved, and why people think she destroyed the world,” he said. In the three episodes of Avatar: Seven Havens that have been released so far, Korra has been blamed for a massive catastrophe that destroyed the world and forced humanity to take shelter in the titular seven havens. Ultimately, it looks like Korra may yet be vindicated for her role in such a tragedy, but only time will tell.
