On Tuesday, FXX announced a new animated comedy, Little Demon, starring Danny DeVito (It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia, Matilda) as the devil and Aubrey Plaza (Parks and Recreation, Legion) as his baby mama. The teenage antichrist brought about by their union will be voiced by DeVito’s daughter, Lucy DeVito (Deadbeat, Melissa & Joey), via Deadline.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, the series was created by Darcy Fowler (Nightmare Time), Seth Kirschner (Stop the Bleeding!, 30 Rock) and Kieran Valla (Stop the Bleeding!), who Plaza has worked with on multiple past projects including the TBS pilot Nightmare Time. The creative team behind Little Demon will be joined by Plaza and Dan Harmon (Rick and Morty, Community) as executive producers on the series, which contribute to the scant lineup of FXX and FX on Hulu animated comedies. The series joins Archer and short-form series Cake in the network’s current animation slate.
Deadline provides Little Demon’s official description: “13 years after being impregnated by the Devil, a reluctant mother and her Antichrist daughter attempt to live an ordinary life in Delaware, but are constantly thwarted by monstrous forces, including Satan, who yearns for custody of his daughter’s soul.”
IGN describes Plaza’s role in the upcoming comedy as “a perfect alignment of actor and concept.” Not only is Plaza noted Delawarean, but she has built a career off a sarcastic and benevolently demonic persona. The actress even referred to her Little Demon protagonist as “the role I was born to play” (Twitter).
The news of Little Demon adds to the former Parks and Recreation actress’ eventful 2021 in which she has directed her first full-length episode of television in Cinema Toast, married her partner, director Jeff Baena (The Little Hours) and announced her role in Baena’s next film Spin Me Round alongside Allison Brie (Community, GLOW).
While Tuesday’s Little Demon announcement did not include a timeline for the series’ release, The Hollywood Reporter did confirm that the animated series “has been in the works for more than a year.”
