Arrested Development returns next Sunday on Netflix

Millions of people around the world think their family is dysfunctional. However, one famous family in particular takes the cake when it comes to wacky relatives: the Bluths. 17 months ago it was announced that the beloved show Arrested Development, originally aired on Fox network, would return for a much-awaited fourth season. Arrested Development is a witty comedy that tells the story of the Bluth family: a modern “dynasty” that falls upon hard times when the patriarch is arrested and the family’s assets are seized. The family must adjust their money-loving ways in order to fit their new means.

Instead of being picked up by a network, the fourth season of Arrested Development will be released on Netflix. All 15 episodes will be released at one time and viewers can watch at their own pace. Netflix, a popular video rental/streaming website, has recently been producing its own original series. One of the newest and most popular being the supernatural drama Hemlock Grove, an old favorite which Netflix is now instrumental in resurrecting.

Arrested Development went off the air in 2006 after premiering in November 2003. The fourth season will see the return of the star-studded cast including Jason Bateman, Michael Cera, Portia de Rossi, Will Arnett and Jeffrey Tambor. Credit is largely given to the fans that the show will return. In an Entertainment Weekly interview with the show’s creator Mitchell Hurwitz, he says that while the show has been cancelled for 7 years now, the DVDs and videos on Netflix and Hulu continue to grow in popularity. More than 3 million of the DVDs have been sold and that number only becomes larger as time passes.

Interestingly enough, the new season has been set up as a prequel for an Arrested Development movie which has yet to be approved or put into pre-production. The fourth season will be arranged in a way that each episode focuses on a different member of the Bluth family. For example, the first episode of the season is titled “Michael 1”, followed by “Michael 2” and “George Sr. 1”. The season will continue in this format and, hopefully, all of these episodes will be tied together in the season finale or the potential Arrested Development movie.

All fans are waiting breathlessly for the Arrested Development movie to get the green light, so that there will be a satisfactory end to this witty classic. On May 26 Netflix will release all 15 episodes online. Netflix members will be able to stream it instantly and leave reviews directly on the page. Viewers can watch at their own pace, whether that is consuming it all in one sitting or drawing it out over a few weeks. Either way, it is a choice that the fans deserve to make: after all, without them the new season would not have even been possible.
