Despite the seemingly unrealistic world of The Office, one thing has been proven true. A man in Arizona used the knowledge he gleaned on an episode of The Office that involved CPR training to save the life of a woman. In the episode, Michael Scott (played by Steve Carell) astutely points out that the dummy is not breathing, speculating as to whether one should bother resuscitating a victim with no arms or legs. Regardless of the absurdity of his remarks, the CPR trainer’s tip as to how one can know the exact BMPs needed to save a life (100 beats per minute) is exactly what one man did to save a woman’s life in the real world. Coincidentally, the man’s last name was also Scott.
The Arizona Daily Star reported that Cross Scott was driving when he came upon a white car stuck on the roadside with hazard lights flashing. Scott, a mechanic, was test driving a customer’s vehicle when he came upon the distressed motorist. When Scott stopped to check on the person, he found the driver to be unconscious. He then broke through the car window with a rock and checked her pulse. Employing the skills he observed from Michael Scott at Dunder-Mifflin, Cross Scott was able to save her life.
“I’ve never prepared myself for CPR in my life,” Scott admitted. “I had no idea what I was doing.” It was at that moment that Cross Scott recalled Michael Scott’s chest compressions on a dummy in The Office episode entitled “Stress Relief.” In the episode, Michael does compressions to the beat of “Stayin’ Alive” by the Bee Gees, so Cross Scott did the same. Remarkably, the woman was resuscitated after one minute. Other drivers who pulled over to witness the scene had already called paramedics, and thus the woman’s life was saved.
Concerning the rumored Office reboot, there has been no more discussion. Watch the clip of Michael’s CPR in action below.
