Are There Actually Nine Kingdoms? Egg Playful Corrects Dunc In ‘A Knight Of The Seven Kingdoms’ Season Finale

Dunc and Egg are off to explore the Seven Kingdoms. Or is it nine? The season finale of A Knight Of The Seven Kingdoms displayed the jovial dynamic between Dunc and Egg perfectly, particularly their final scene. As they journey off to their next adventure, Dunc asks Egg where they should travel next in the Seven Kingdoms. Egg quickly corrects him, insisting they are actually nine. Dunc and likely much of the audience were struck with confusion, never having actually bothered to count the kingdoms of Westeros. Egg proceeds to recite the nine kingdoms: The Crownlands, The Riverlands, The North, The Vale, The Reach, The Iron Islands, The Westerlands, and the new addition of Dorne.

In the time of A Knight Of The Seven Kingdoms, Dorne recently came under Targaryen rule after centuries of attempted conquest. Egg’s grandfather, Daeron II, brought Dorne into the realm peacefully, one of the many reasons he would come to be known as Daeron the Good. Even discounting Dorne, there were still eight kingdoms prior to the establishment of Dorne as Wetserosi territory.

According to Decider, this is because the Seven Kingdoms refer to the historical lands conquered by Aegon I, aptly named Aegon the Conqueror. The Crownlands were established after the seven kingdoms were brought under Targareyan rule from territory that was contested by the Riverlands and the Storm Lords.

A Knight Of The Seven Kingdoms utilizes this bit of semantics for a moment of brevity and to showcase Dunc and Egg’s relationship. HBO playfully ended the show with a title card that read “A Knight Of The Nine Kingdoms”.

The scene perfectly encapsulates the tone that many fans griped about at the beginning of the season, but most eventually came to love. The show differs from House Of The Dragon and the flagship series in its lighthearted nature. The series eventually progresses to the classic George R.R. Martin twists and turns, but has a much heavier dose of comedy.
