Deadline reports that Arcane is based on characters from the League of Legends video game, developing characters from the rich city of Piltover and the poverty-stricken Zaun. The series follows sisters Jin and Vi who find themselves on opposite sides of a growing class war between the haves and the have-nots. As the gap widens, forces beyond both of their control cast them in a dangerous battle of chaos and violence.
According to Deadline, Arcane was created by Christian Linke and Alex Yee. Linke and Yee executive produce with Marc Merrill (League of Legends: Origins), Brandon Beck (7 Days Out), Jane Chung, and Thomas Vu (Spore, Players). It stars Hailee Steinfeld (The Marvels), Ella Purnell (Yellowjackets), and Katie Leung (Harry Potter).
Deadline also says that Arcane became the first streaming show to win Best Animated Program at the Emmys last year, beating out series such as Big Mouth and BoJack Horseman, that had been previously nominated. According to The Wrap, it also coveted the Annie Award for Best General Audience Animated Television Broadcast Production.
In addition to its awards, The Wrap reports the series is one of the better video game adaptations listed with other series of recent such as HBO’s The Last of Us and Netflix’s Castlevania. It is even compared to film adaptations such as Sonic the Hedgehog, the Resident Evil films, and Detective Pikachu.
