Apple TV’s newest sci-fi series, Murderbot, starring Alexander Skarsgård (True Blood, Big Little Lies), has received a stunning 98% on Rotten Tomatoes. The overall consensus: it’s definitely worth a watch, especially if you’re a fan of science fiction, according to Comicbook.com.
Skarsgård’s performance in particular has garnered significant positive attention. Critics agree that “Alexander Skarsgård’s superbly dry wit brings a lot of heart to Murderbot, making for a refreshingly jaunty sci-fi saga about finally coming out of one’s shell,” via Comicbook.com.
Murderbot is based on the book series The Murderbot Diaries by Martha Wells, and follows the story of a self-reprogrammed security robot who would rather spend his day relaxing than actually doing his job. Skarsgård himself has praised the beloved book series as fantastic source material for the show, according to Comicbook.com
Comicbook.com reports that the first season is based on Wells’ first novella, All Systems Red. Series creators Chris (Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, About a Boy) and Paul Weitz (In Good Company, Cirque du Freak: The Vampire’s Assistant) have stated that the first season does receive a real, satisfying conclusion, but that they hope to expand the series to more seasons in the future. There’s plenty of source material for the show to work with, and the Weitz brothers are hoping for a years-long run.
The Apple TV show has a lot of potential and is yet another addition to their growing library of quality shows. According to Comicbook.com, it’s still up in the air whether or not Murderbot will receive any awards consideration or if it will be a hit among the masses. At the very least, it’s sure to be a fan favorite amongst fans of the books and sci-fi fans alike.
