

Season two of Apple TV+’s Presumed Innocent is taking shape retaining a female lead. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Rachel Brosnahan has been cast in the second installment of the anthology series. The first saw Jake Gyllenhaal (Nightcrawler, Othello) take on the role famously made on-screen by Harrison Ford (Shrinking, Air Force One).
The legal thriller produced by JJ Abrams (Duster, Lost) and written by David E. Kelley (Chicago Hope, Big Little Lies) followed Gyllenhaal’s Rusty Sabich, a Chicago prosecutor who finds himself accused of killing a female colleague with whom he happened to have an affair. Throughout the trial, Sabich’s deepest secrets are exposed, impacting his professional reputation, and his relationship with his family. The first season also starred Ruth Negga (Passing, Deacon), Bill Camp (Zero Day, Salem’s Lot), O-T Fagbenle (Black Widow, The Handmaid’s Tale), Peter Sarsgaard (Shattered Glass, September 5), and Renate Reinsve (A Different Man, Armand).
While the first season was based on Scott Turow’s (Identical, Ordinary Heroes) 1987 novel, The Hollywood Reporter details that the next installment draws inspiration from Dissection of a Murder, written by first-time author Jo Murray. Set to be published next year, the only plot details known is the story will follow a lawyer defending an accused judge killer.
Emmy-winner Brosnahan is best known for her role as Miriam “Midge” Maisel, the housewife-turned-comedienne in Prime Video’s The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel. Viewers can see her next in the highly anticipated blockbuster, Superman, as The Daily Planet journalist Lois Lane. She previously starred in the action thriller, The Amaetur, alongside Rami Malek (Bohemian Rasphody, Mr. Robot).
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Abrams’ Bad Robot and David E. Kelley Productions will produce the series in collaboration with Warner Bros. Television. Erica Lipez (The Morning Show, Bates Motel) joins Kelley as a co-showrunner. Additional executive producers include Bad Robot’s Rachel Rusch Rich (Lovecraft Country, Batman: Caped Crusader), Kelley Production’s Matthew Tinker (The Undoing, Nine Perfect Strangers), Gyllenhaal, and Brosnahan. Turow will serve as a co-executive producer.
