Brie Larson (actress, Captain Marvel) is set to star in and executive produce Lessons In Chemistry, an upcoming series from Apple TV+. Co-creator of Netflix‘s Unbelievable Susannah Grant (screenwriter, Erin Brokovich) will serve as showrunner on this straight-to-series order according to Deadline.
Via Deadline, the series is based on an upcoming novel from author Bonnie Garmus. Lessons in Chemistry will follow Larson as Elizabeth Zott, an aspiring scientist living in the early 1960s. Despite he ambitions, Elizabeth must grapple with the societal demands that women only excel in the domestic arena rather than professionally. After finding herself single, pregnant and unemployed, Elizabeth accepts a position as a TV cooking show host. On her show, Elizabeth provides her ever-growing audience with more pertinent advice than kitchen tips, all while dreaming of returning to her scientific endeavors.
The series won’t be the first joint venture between Larson and Apple’s streaming platform. The Captain Marvel star is additionally the star and executive producer of an unnamed Apple female-centered CIA agent series. According to Deadline, the series was ordered back in March of 2019 but has yet to be released on the platform. The delay likely comes due to the Covid-19 pandemic and conflicting production timelines between the unnamed series and Captain Marvel II.
Along with Larson, Aggregate Films producers Jason Bateman (actor and producer, Ozark) and Michael Costigan (producer, Extremely Wicked, Shockingly Evil and Vile) as well as showrunner Susannah Grant will be executive producing.
Although now more associated to her galaxy saving persona Captain Marvel, Larson is familiar with hard-hitting dramas. She won an Academy Award for her performance in Room (2015) and most recently starred in Just Mercy (2019). Lessons In Chemistry creator and showrunner Grant is also no stranger to critical praise, as her Netflix series Unbelievable (2019) earned her an Outstanding Limited Series Emmy nomination to accompany her Oscar Nomination for Erin Brokovich (2000). With these two powerhouses at the helm, Lessons In Chemistry is sure to catch the attention of more than just Apple TV+ subscribers.
