A canceled Apple TV+ series is getting new life on the stage. According to Deadline, Schmigadoon! is set to arrive on Broadway for a limited run next spring. The stage adaptation is set to arrive Monday, April 20, through September 6, 2026, at the Nederlander Theater. The planned Broadway run follows a successful stint at The Kennedy Center. Produced by Lorne Michaels (Saturday Night Live, Ladies & Gentlemen…50 Years of SNL Music) and No Guarantees Productions, the play will open for previews on April 4. Keegan-Michael Key (The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, Play Dirty) and Cecily Strong (Last Week Tonight with John Oliver, The Garfield Movie) starred in the television musical.
The producer, Michaels, stated to Deadline, “Schmigadoon! is a love letter to the Golden Age of movie musicals. It’s a little bit nostalgic and a lot of fun. We’re very excited to bring it to Broadway.”
According to Deadline, Schmigadoon! tells the story about two New York doctors, Key’s Josh and Strong’s Melissa, as they embark on a couples backpacking retreat to rekindle their relationship. While on the retreat, they find themselves in a magical town called Schmigadoon. This is a magical town where all the townspeople communicate as if they are in a musical, singing and dancing. The two doctors discover there is only one way out: to find true love. However, true love may or may not be with each other.
According to Deadline, the cast and creatives for the Broadway version of the Series have not been announced. Series co-creator Cinco Paul (The Lorax, Wagon Ho!) will have his music featured in the score of the Broadway show. Joining Michaels on the producing end are Broadway Video’s Micah Frank and Caroline Maroney, and No Guarantees Productions’ Christine Schwarzman and Megan O’Keefe.
Premiering in 2021, Schmigadoon aired for two seasons. It was canceled in 2024 despite Paul having the season penned, including 25 new songs. Both seasons are available to stream on Apple TV+.
