The first season of the show Hijack, starring Idris Elba (Luther), became Apple TV+’s second series ever to make its way into the streaming rankings. According to The Hollywood Reporter, “Hijack recorded 357 million minutes of viewing time for the week its finale debuted, according to Nielsen.” The series has been ranked eighth among original series, making the weekly top ten on Apple TV+ for the first time since the show Ted Lasso.
For the sixth straight week in a row, Suits on Netflix and Peacock accumulated over three billion watch minutes. Via The Hollywood Reporter, “In the seven weeks since its first appearance in the rankings, the legal drama has racked up 23.54 billion minutes of viewing – the equivalent of roughly 4.18 million complete viewings of the nine-season, 134-episode series…” The Lincoln Lawyer on Netflix retrieved the top spot among original series during the latter half of the second season on August 3 with 1.7 billion viewing minutes. Both Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 on Disney+ and The Super Mario Bros. Movie on Peacock both had substantial streaming premiere weeks, with Guardians amassing 1.63 billion minutes and Super Mario Bros. 717 million minutes. In the top ten for the week of July 31 includes The Summer I Turned Pretty on Prime Video with 399 million viewing minutes over 13 episodes. Paramount+’s Star Trek: Strange New Worlds accumulated 362 million minutes over the 19 available episodes. Hijack, although not-yet-renewed, is on the charts, as well as Jack Ryan on Prime Video with 346 million minutes over its 30 episodes, and Peacock’s Twisted Metal with 326 million minutes over 10 episodes.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, “Nielsen’s streaming ratings cover viewing on TV sets only and don’t include minutes watched on computers or mobile devices. The ratings only measure U.S. audiences, not those in other countries.” The first season of Hijack has been rated at 88% on Rotten Tomatoes and has not yet been confirmed for a second season. Elba, who plays Sam Nelson on the show, is open to returning for a second season.
