“We are doing this my way,” is one of many powerful lines delivered by Jennifer Aniston in the official trailer of her new TV show The Morning Show. The official trailer was dropped a week after Apple TV released the teaser trailer.
This new trailer gives us a more in depth look at who the characters are and what the show is about. From the start of the trailer you hear Jennifer Aniston’s Alex Levy announce that her cohost Mitch Kessler, played by Emmy nominee Steve Carell, was fired due to allegations. One can infer that the accusations are sexual allegations as the show is to incorporate the #MeToo movement. Series director Mimi Leder has stated the show “deals with #MeToo and Time’s Up movements and women in power.” That announcement is followed by Kessler stating that Levy is throwing him under the bus then he proceeds to smash his television.
The trailer also shows a rivalry brewing between Levy and Reese Witherspoon’s Bradley Jackson. Aniston is the veteran news host who is fearing being forgotten and replaced. As she states, “I just need to be able to control the narrative so that I am not written out of it.” While Witherspoon, sporting a new darker hair color, is playing a fiery, outspoken journalist who as she claims doesn’t “fit into any mold.”
The two are brought together as The Morning Show’s producer, Cory Ellison, played by Billy Crudup, is ready to move on claiming Aniston’s Levy, “sell-by date expired years ago” and is working on creating a “rebirth” and is “grooming new people” for the show. However, Levy is not going down without a fight and Witherspoon’s Jackson claims she “doesn’t want [Levy’s] job.”
AppleTV described the show as, “What happens when the people you trust to tell the truth prove themselves to be dishonest? The Morning Show follows the free fall of an early morning newscast in the wake of a scandal, and its struggle to survive in an era when news arrives in the palm of your hand.” The show’s official description deals with “the high-stakes world of morning news and the lives of the people who help America wake up in the morning,” primarily following the “two ambitious, aspirational female characters.” Aniston stated that it will take a look “Through the prism of those under-slept, over-adrenalized people in front of and behind the camera, we take an honest look at the complex relationships between women and men in the workplace, and we engage in the conversation people are a little too afraid to have unless they’re behind closed doors.”
The series is executive produced and showran by Kerry Ehrin, known for her work on Bates Motel. Aniston will also be producing the show with her partner Kristin Hahn through their production company Echo Films. As well as Witherspoon who will be producing the show with her partner Lauren Levy Neustadter through their production company Hello Sunshine.
The show also stars Nestor Carbonell, Mark Duplass, Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Karen Pittman, Bel Powley, Victoria Tate, and Desean Terry.
The Morning Show will premiere in the fall with a 10-episode-long season on AppleTV.
