The world has been sans Godzilla for a bit too long, Apple TV+ has debuted the first trailer for Monarch: Legacy of Monsters, solving the lack of Godzilla! According to The Hollywood Reporter, this first teaser has been highly anticipated by audiences and is the first in their Godzilla television series.
Monarch: Legacy of Monsters will feature father and son Kurt (Tombstone, The Thing) and Wyatt Russell (The Woman in the Window, Shimmer Lake), who will portray the same character, only at different stages of life. Alongside the Russells, the series stars Mari Yamamoto (Kate, Bourek), Kiersey Clemons (Somebody I Used to Know, The Flash), Anna Sawai (Pachinko, F9), Anders Holm (How to be Single, Workaholics), Joe Tippett (Mr. Harrigan’s Phone, Mare of Easttown), Ren Watabe (461 Days of Bento) and Elisa Lasowski (Hyena, Blood Machines). The trailer even reveals that John Goodman (Roseanne, The Big Lebowski) will be making a cameo as a reprisal of his role from Kong: Skull Island.
Legendary Television is behind this project and is executive produced and co-developed by Matt Fraction (Diagram for Delinquents, Warren Ellis: Captured Ghosts) and Chris Black (Reckless, Masterminds). The first two episodes are directed by Matt Shakman (Fantastic Four, Star Trek 4).
The official description for Monarch: Legacy of Monsters reads, “Following the thunderous battle between Godzilla and the Titans that leveled San Francisco, and the shocking revelation that monsters are real, Monarch: Legacy of Monsters tracks two siblings following in their father’s footsteps to uncover their family’s connection to the secretive organization known as Monarch. Clues lead them into the world of monsters and ultimately down the rabbit hole to Army officer Lee Shaw, taking place in the 1950s and half a century later where Monarch is threatened by what Shaw knows. The dramatic saga – spanning three generations – reveals buried secrets and the way that epic, earth-shattering events can reverberate through our lives.” The Russells are confirmed to play Officer Lee Shaw within the series.
Legendary Television began this Monsterverse back in 2014 with Godzilla and continued into 2017 with Kong: Skull Island. In 2019 Godzilla: King of Monsters preceded 2021’s Godzilla vs. Kong. Once this Apple TV+ series concludes, the next film in the franchise is rumored to be Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire, which is set to release in April of 2024. Toho, the current owner of the rights to Godzilla, has their own new Godzilla movie set to be in theaters December of this year. The new film is titled Godzilla Minus One. The film takes place in postwar Japan, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
The new Godzilla series Monarch: Legacy of Monsters will premiere globally on November 17 with the first two episodes, every episode thereafter will premiere each following Friday through January 12.
