Apple TV announced today that it will host a docuseries on retired tennis player Andre Agassi. Sixteen years after his celebrated memoir, “Open: An Autobiography,” was embraced as one of the greatest sports books in American literature, Agassi’s life of twists and turns will be highlighted in the multi-part series.
Agassi was born on April 29th, 1970, in Las Vegas, Nevada, to a retired boxer. Agassi’s father had taught him tennis at a young age, and it stuck with him. At thirteen, he won his first tennis game. He turned pro at 16, climbing the ranks and earning No. 25 in the world by 1989. As a professional, Agassi was ranked #1 in April of 1995 and ended his career with a total of 60 titles and a singles record of 870-214, according to atptour.com. While in the prime of his career in the mid-1990s, his personal and professional life suffered. A recurring injury, a failing marriage and novice drug use saw him fall in the ranks by 1997. However, he managed an impressive comeback in the early 2000s. Towards his retirement, he started a multi-million dollar charity for youth tennis players called the 10 and Under Tennis Program. Agassi has also made brand deals with Nike sneakers and Wilson rackets.
Apple TV Press notes that the thrilling multi-part series will be directed by filmmaker Chris Smith (The Pool, Sr.) and produced by Stacy Smith (Lexx, The Conclave) and Justin Gimelstob, along with Agassi and his family, to make sure everything comes out truthfully.
