After three seasons, Apple Tv+ has canceled the drama series Truth Be Told. Star of the show Octavia Spencer (Hidden Figures, The Help) announced the news on Monday morning, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
The drama series which premiered in 2019 starred Spencer as a podcaster who put everything on the line, including her own life, to pursue truth and justice. Season three debuted on the platform in January. Amongst the cast is Gabrielle Union (Being Mary Jane, 10 Things I Hate About You) and Mekhi Phifer (Soul Food, Obsession).
After the cancellation was revealed on Spencer’s instagram with the message, “I wanted to share the news that after three seasons of seeking truth and justice, Poppy Scoville is going on a much-needed vacation”, Apple Tv also confirmed the news. Head of Programming at Apple Matt Cherniss shared with The Hollywood Reporter that it was an honor and a privilege to collaborate with Spencer and Reese Witherspoon’s (Your Place Or Mine, Legally Blonde) Hello Sunshine banner on the series. He added that the show, “has given us the opportunity to not only witness Octavia’s mesmerizing and nuanced portrayal of crime-solving podcaster Poppy Scoville, but to explore so many powerful and timely themes set against the backdrop of a captivating family drama. We can’t wait to find our next project together.”
Season three of the anthology, which saw the addition of Union to the cast, wrapped its run in March. The series hailed from showrunner Nichelle Tramble Spellman (The Good Wife) and has featured such stars as Kate Hudson (Something Borrowed, How To Lose A Guy in 10 Days) Aaron Paul (Breaking Bad), Merle Dandridge (The Last of Us) and Tracie Thoms (9-1-1).
Spellman exec produced alongside Maisha Closson (How to Get Away with Murder), who served as showrunner for season three. Truth Be Told was produced for Apple by Hello Sunshine, Chernin Entertainment, Orit Entertainment and Fifth Season.
