Apple TV+ has new upcoming series in school teacher comedy Mr. Corman. The half-hour single-camera show will focus on the life of a teacher in the San Fernando Valley as he grapples with the paradigm of adulthood. It comes from the mind of Joseph Gordon-Levitt (Inception, 500 Days of Summer), who will write, direct, and executive produce the series in tandem with playing the lead role of Mr. Corman. Gordon-Levitt took to Twitter to express his excitement for the project, stating, “So excited to be writing+directing again. Been quietly working on Mr. Corman for quite some time now. It’s a really personal project, getting to put a lot of myself (and other versions of myself) into it.”
The actor’s move to wear multiple hats on the upcoming series is not without precedent. In 2013, he wrote and directed his first feature feature film, Don Jon. In tandem with those duties, he also starred in the motion picture. What is unique about Mr. Corman is that it marks Godron-Levitt’s first live-action television role since his tenure on NBC’s 3rd Rock from the Sun, which occurred during his teen years. In the time since, he has reserved his acting talents for the big screen, appearing in films like The Dark Knight Rises, Looper, and 50/50.
The announcement of Mr. Corman comes almost immediately after Apple TV+ elected to cancel Bastards, another upcoming show that Richard Gere was set to star in. That series was reportedly axed for being too dark to fit the brand that Apple is trying to build for its streaming service. Shows that are still going ahead at Apple TV+ include drama The Morning Show starring Jennifer Aniston and Reese Witherspoon, comedy Dickinson starring Hailee Steinfeld, and drama For All Mankind from Battlestar Galactica executive producer Ronald D. Moore.
There is currently no official release date for Mr. Corman or for Apple TV+. The streaming service is expected to become available sometime this fall.
