Animal Kingdom has been renewed for its sixth and final season, according to Variety. News of the renewal arrives before the fifth season premiere, which is slated to air this summer.
The series follows Joshua “J” Cody, played by Finn Cole (Peaky Blinders) who moves in with his estranged grandmother, Janine “Smurf” Cody, played by Ellen Barkin (Sea of Love), and her family following his mother’s death due to a heroin overdose. He later finds out that his family has been making their living through calculated armed robberies and other crimes. Season five follows Smurf’s three sons, Pope, played by Shawn Hatosy (Southland), Craig, played by Ben Robson (Vikings), and Deran, played by Jake Weary (Fred), as they recuperate from their grandmother’s death and begin planning revenge.
Animal Kingdom was well rated, having reached 27 million viewers in season four as well as ranking among 2019’s top 10 cable dramas for adults ranging from 18-49. Now that news of the series’ conclusion has been released, the network has very few scripted shows left. The drama Claws is slated to end after its upcoming fourth season while Snowpiercer is set to release its second season later in the month.
