As reported by Comicbook, Tony Gilroy (Michael Clayton, Rogue One: A Star Wars Story) and Diego Luna (The Book of Life, Y tu mamá también) went on the record with Empire to discuss what is in store for the early rise of the Rebellion. They paint a picture of everyday lives that can no longer continue as is when the Rebellion becomes fully engulfed in its mission. Luna goes as far as commenting that parts of Rogue One will forever be “re-contextualized,” claiming that certain dialogue will take on new meaning and draw on emotional reactions.
“What is the real effect of time — pressurized, painful time — on ordinary people that hopefully you care a lot about?” Gilroy goes on to state. “What happens to their love affairs? Their relationships? Their homes? Their children? What happens to everything around them if you’re thrust into this vice-grip of revolution? Those are the big tectonic moves of the second season.”
Comicbook continues to report that Gilroy spoke on what’s being risked by Luthen Rael, the mysterious and radical operative who is willing to make morally grey choices for the greater good. “Now, all of a sudden, he’s going public. What do you do if your currency is privacy and secrecy, and failure is death?” Gilroy proclaims. “How do you scale up? How do you play with others? How do all the disparate pieces of the Rebellion come together in Yavin?”
With a huge selection of Star Wars series to choose from, Andor did a wonderful job of setting itself apart from its companions. It brought a much more serious and darker tone to the show to highlight the real oppressive effect the Empire has had on each character’s plot-line. This proved to be very fruitful for the series as it was nominated for Outstanding Drama Series at the Emmys.
The trailer that was released late last month is a dark and dramatic FX-style cinema that really drives home the Rogue One connection. It also features a beautiful yet looming death star. The series aims to make fans question who the bad guys are as the lines become blurred throughout the back and forth sequences. Andor season two premieres later this month on Disney+.
