Reports have flooded in that journalist Anderson Cooper is leaving CBS’s 60 Minutes. According to Deadline, the CNN anchor had served as a correspondent for the news program for almost two decades.
Cooper’s part-time gig was agreed upon between CBS and the Warner-owned news network. However, sources report Cooper optioned not to renew his contract with CBS in favor for his full-time position at CNN. According to Deadline, Cooper released the following statement:
“Being a correspondent at 60 Minutes has been one of the great honors of my career. I got to tell amazing stories, and work with some of the best producers, editors, and camera crews in the business. For nearly twenty years, I’ve been able to balance my jobs at CNN and CBS, but I have little kids now and I want to spend as much time with them as possible, while they still want to spend time with me.”
This recent departure comes amidst Paramount’s regime change at the network, with Bari Weiss taking over as editor-in-chief. Weiss’s role and methodology has consumed a lot of conversations about the news program, and CBS News in general. Earlier this year, there was fervor over Weiss’s decision to not air a segment about the Venezuelan men deported to a notorious prison in El Salvador. While Weiss protested that the story still needed some reporting, many — including the producer Sharyn Alfonsi — felt the reasoning was “political” and not journalistic.
This incident comes two years after Trump sued 60 Minutes for allegedly showing bias in the editing of an interview with presidential candidate, Kamala Harris. Paramount would settle the lawsuit, fearing its merger with Skydance may be impacted. This decision saw the departures of longtime executive producer, Bill Owens, and the head of the news division, Wendy McMahon.
According to Deadline, Cooper began his tenure at 60 Minutes during the 2006-07 season. As part of the award-winning program, Cooper earned multiple Emmys. He recently renewed his contract with CNN, which includes hosting The Whole Story with Anderson Cooper and All There Is, a podcast and streaming series.
