Amy Sherman-Palladino Reveals One Guest Star Who Won’t be Back

After news that Melissa McCarthy is returning to Gilmore Girls, Amy Sherman-Palladino has revealed the one guest star that isn’t returning to the Netflix reboot. In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Sherman-Palladino said that Max Medina (portrayed by Scott Cohen) won’t be in the reboot – but wishes they would have been able to squeeze him in.

“One person I didn’t figure out how to get in was Scott Cohen, whom we love so much. Not that we’re not still thinking about him, but we couldn’t figure out how to get Max in there. We had so much story. We left storylines on the cutting room floor before we started,” Sherman-Palladino said.

She added that it got to the point where it got difficult to work people into the revival, saying that there were few characters who weren’t in the original show that are getting cameos in the revival series. Mae Whitman, who played star Lauren Graham’s daughter on Parenthood, and Sutton Foster, who starred on Sherman-Palladino’s show Bunheads, are two of the those characters.

Cohen played Max Medina in the first season of Gilmore Girls, who started out as Rory’s English teacher at Chilton. Eventually, he became Lorelai’s boyfriend and even proposed to her in the infamous thousand yellow daisies scene at the end of the first season.

Though Lorelai and Max didn’t work out in the long run (Lorelai got cold feet and called off the wedding), he appeared later in the show. His last appearance was in the third season, when he is the staff advisor on the booster committee which Lorelai is forced into being a part of because she didn’t participate in many parental activities at Chilton during Rory’s tenure at the school.

For those who are interested in learning who’s coming back to for the revival, Entertainment Weekly has compiled a list of who is coming back, including town favorites like Taylor Doose and Miss Patty. Paul Anka, Lorelai’s dog she adopts in the sixth season of the show, is also coming back for the revival.

While Netflix has yet to announce a premiere date for the show, it is expected to air sometime later in 2016. Production wraps on the show on May 10.
