In typical American Horror Story style, the show has released six cryptic, eerie teasers for its sixth season, titled “?6”. Unlike previous seasons where we have explored locales such as a murder house, coven, insane asylum, and hotel, AHS:?6 takes us into the vast countryside.
In this chapter of the anthology, the chaos will be set in an abandoned farmhouse. AHS’s mystique is still at work here, but perhaps viewers can riddle part of the enigma by watching the released teasers.
Teaser No. 1: “What’s Cooking?”
This first teaser depicts a farmhouse with smoke spiraling in the shape of a 6. The audio features the tumultuous clamor of a chainsaw, an ode to horror-classic Texas Chainsaw Massacre.
Teaser No. 2: “Sunset Stroll”
In the next teaser, we are introduced to three glowing-eyed country folk—and not the friendly neighborhood farmer type. The clip invokes Hills Have Eyes imagery.
Teaser No. 3: “Post-Op”
The teaser “Post Op” shows a warped patient as he gets his head stapled after seemingly undergoing a craniotomy—typical of the torture that is ubiquitous in the show.
Teaser No. 4: “Lullaby”
This bassinet equipped with a deadly mobile calls back to Lady Gaga’s Season 5 character, The Countess, and her demonic baby.
Teaser No. 5: “Descent”
The second-to-last teaser depicts a horror movie trope—running down the stairs into the darkness. And as the cherry on top, the person in question is barefoot, making for one of those situations that leaves the viewer wondering why the character would do such a thing.
Teaser No. 5: “Milli Crossing”
The last teaser illustrates Lady Gaga as her newest American Horror Story character, as phlegmatic as ever, as a millipede makes its way down her face. Millipedes are common on farms, after all.
The overarching theme of these teasers suggests that this season may be what happens when Rosemary’s Baby meets Texas Chainsaw Massacre. The teasers are giving off some cannibalistic vibrations and also suggest the possible presence of extraterrestrials. New photos from the AHS set, that feature a colonial house, suggest that this season may be exploring the mystery of the lost Roanoke colony.
In this season’s farmhouse, another terrifying locality, viewers should not expect anything less than the monstrosity that has characterized every other season of the American Horror Story anthology.
American Horror Story returns to FX on Sept. 14.
