With the expansion of The Walking Dead franchise, fans are able to get the very best out of the zombie drama. The flagship show spawned universe so large and recognizable that a spinoff series was created for a group other than the main cast of the original – Fear the Walking Dead, which is currently airing season five. As proof of the franchise’s longevity, another spinoff was announced in April.
President of programming for AMC Networks and AMC Studios, David Madden, shared his excitement about the news.
“We’re thrilled that the Dead will keep walking into a new corner of the post-apocalyptic world, a corner that will present stories and characters unlike any that The Walking Dead has dramatized thus far, and that is bound to excite one of the most passionate fanbases in television,” said Madden.
The show “will feature two young female protagonists and focus on the first generation to come of age in the apocalypse as we know it. Some will become heroes. Some will become villains. In the end, all of them will be changed forever. Grown-up and cemented in their identities, both good and bad.”
Alexa Mansour, Nicolas Cantu, and Hal Cumpston have been cast for the spinoff. AMC has not shared the specifics of each character. The series will consist of 10 episodes, all shot in Virginia.
Chief Content Officer of The Walking Dead universe, Scott Gimple, is co-creator. Writer and producer Matt Negrete will serve as showrunner.
“This extraordinary comic created a world that already lives in multiple forms, and in the hearts and minds of millions of fans around the world, and will for many years to come,” said AMC.
AMC Studios is set to begin production for the untitled spinoff this summer. A 2020 release is expected.
